Rainbow Paper - Science

Aim: To Separate colours by using the process of chromatography.

Definition: Chromatography is a method of separating out materials from a mixture using a liquid.

Materials;

  1. Boiling Tube
  2. Water
  3. Filter Paper
  4. Water Based Felt
  5. Scissors
  6. Test Tube Stand
  7. Ruler
  8. Pencil
Process;
  1. Cut up a piece of paper with your scissors.
  2. Pule a 1cm line at the bottom of your paper strip.
  3. Put 8mL of water into the bottom of your boiling tube.
  4. Draw two coloured dots on the pencil line.
  5. Drop the paper strip into the boiling once it is touching the water at the bottom you can crease the top of the paper over.
  6. Watch, take 2 photos and observe the chromatography process on your paper.
Definitions:

Capillary Action :Capillary action is the process of a liquid flowing in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity

Filter Paper : Filter paper is a semi-permeable paper barrier placed perpendicular to a liquid or air flow. It is used to separate fine solid particles from liquids or gases.

Solvent : A solvent is a substance that dissolves a solute, resulting in a solution. A solvent is usually a liquid but can also be a solid, a gas, or a supercritical fluid.

Conclusion:

What colours changed the most ? Green

How many new colours could you see? One it was yellow from the green

Which colours travelled the furthers? Blue

Skittles - Science

Chromatography is a technique for the best separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension   through a medium in which the components move at different rates.

Aim: To separate the colours from the skittles by using chromatography.

 Materials:

  1. 5 Skittles
  2. Water
  3. Petri Dish
  4. Beaker
 Process:
  1. Get your Equipment set up ready to pour the 50mls of water into the petri dish with the skittles.
  2. Place the Skittles into the petri dish around the edges.
  3. Pour 50mls water gently into the middle of the petri dish.
  4. Watch as the water removes the dye from the skittles.
  5. Take pictures of your Skittles.

Gummy Bears Osmosis - Science

 Hello,

Gummy Bear Osmosis

Aim:

I want to find out what happens to Gummy Bears when we put them into different liquids.

Hypothesis

I think that my Gummy Bear will expand its size and become slimy. The weigh of my Gummy Bear was originally 2.35g

Method:

  • Three Solutions - water, sugar and salt
  • Four Gummy Bears of the same colour
  • Two Petri Dishes
  • Marker pen
  • Electronic Balance
  • Measuring Cylinder
  • Beaker
Steps
  1. Get your equipment
  2. Label Petri Dishes with DRY, WATER, SALT WATER, SUGAR WATER.
  3. Weigh the Gummy Bears and record their weight on the Petri Dish
  4. Add 40mL of the soloution into the Petri dish.

Solvent

Dry

Wet

Water

2.45

2.45 (still the same)

Salt Water

2.36

2.74

Sugar Water

2.35

2.91

Findings

My gummy bear didn’t expand as much as the other ones because I didn’t put enough sugar water but it it got a bit bigger

Late Pink Shirt Day

 Hey Readers,

This week we have been colouring in some Pink shirts for Pink Shirt Day. I sketched it again because  I didn't like my design. I did the back as well because Mrs C told us so it would look finished and because shirts have a back. I took it home and coloured it in it was pretty fun. Has your school ever talked about bullying?

Drama - Paper Masks

In drama we are making masks out off paper, Mrs C had some cool examples of already made masks, I decided of like a butterfly kind of shape on top off the eyes, here are 3 pictures of masks I liked, but they are quite tricky so I'm trying to put together the mask I already started in Drama, when I finish my mask I'll do a post about it, and explain more about it. Have you ever made a mask in school?
